On June 7, 2025, the Government of Canada announced that quantum technologies will be among the core priorities for the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. This marks a major milestone for Canada’s quantum sector — and a pivotal moment for international coordination on the future of this strategic technology platform.
Below is a statement from QIC’s CEO, Lisa Lambert, on the importance of this focus, QIC’s role in shaping this agenda, and what comes next.
“Today’s announcement from Prime Minister Carney’s office that quantum technologies will be a focus of Canada’s G7 Presidency marks a defining moment for the global quantum economy. It affirms what industry leaders already know: quantum is no longer a future possibility — it is a critical enabler of economic growth, security, resilience, and shared prosperity.
Quantum Industry Canada (QIC) is proud to have helped catalyze this step. Last October, QIC and our partners in the International Council of Quantum Industry Associations (ICQIA) submitted a joint letter to Canada’s then-Prime Minister, urging G7 prioritization of quantum. Signed by industry leaders from Canada, the U.S., Japan, the UK, and the EU, the letter called for trusted international collaboration to advance shared strategic priorities — from quantum-readiness and resilient supply chains to national security and economic competitiveness
We welcome today’s recognition that accelerating the quantum transition is essential to “building energy security and accelerating the digital transition” — one of three core missions guiding Canada’s Presidency G7 agenda. Quantum technologies are already converging with cybersecurity, AI, advanced computing, communications and networking, next-generation sensing — with real-world implications for secure infrastructure, manufacturing, energy systems, and defence readiness.
This moment of global alignment comes at a critical time. Just days after the Leaders’ Summit, QIC will host QUANTUM NOW | ICI QUANTIQUE in partnership with Distriq, the Quantum Innovation Zone, in Montréal on June 18–19. As an official Industry & Innovation Global Event for the UN-declared International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, QUANTUM NOW will carry the conversation forward — connecting senior leaders from business, government, and investment to align on the industrial path ahead.
Canada was among the first countries to recognize the strategic potential of quantum — and over the past few decades, we’ve grown into a globally respected leader whose impact far exceeds our size. This position is no accident. It reflects a coordinated effort across research, industry, and government to turn scientific excellence into strategic advantage — an effort we are eager to see scaled in line with the accelerating pace of global quantum development.
As the world enters a new era of technological competition and cooperation, QIC and our ICQIA partners stand ready to help ensure G7 nations lead with unity, purpose — and action.”
